Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced his visit to Kyiv, scheduled for Friday, August 23. During this historic visit, which will be the first by an Indian prime minister to Ukraine in 30 years of diplomatic relations, Modi intends to discuss the possibility of a peaceful resolution to the war between Russia and Ukraine.
According to Reuters, Narendra Modi said that during his stay in Kyiv he would “share perspectives” on a peaceful resolution of the “Ukraine-Russia conflict.” He also stressed the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation between India and Ukraine, noting: “As a friend and partner, we look forward to a speedy restoration of peace and stability in the region.”.
The visit to Ukraine comes after Modi's two-day stay in Poland, making his trip particularly significant in a complex geopolitical context in which India is trying to balance its historically warm relations with Moscow with a desire to strengthen partnerships with Western countries to contain India's regional rival China.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the visit, noting that details of the trip would be provided during Monday, August 19.
