Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced his visit to Kyiv, which is scheduled for Friday, August 23. During this historic visit, which will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ukraine in 30 years of diplomatic relations, Modi intends to discuss the possibility of a peaceful settlement of the war between Russia and Ukraine.
According to Reuters, Narendra Modi said that during his stay in Kyiv, he would "share perspectives" on the peaceful resolution of the "Ukraine-Russia conflict." He also emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation between India and Ukraine, noting: "As a friend and partner, we hope for a quick restoration of peace and stability in the region."
The visit to Ukraine will take place after Modi's two-day stay in Poland. That makes his trip particularly significant amid a complex geopolitical context in which India is trying to balance a historically warm relationship with Moscow and a desire to strengthen partnerships with Western countries to contain China, India's regional rival.
India's Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the visit, saying details of the trip would be provided during Monday, August 19.
