The Bulgakov Museum in Kyiv responded to the decision of the "Institute of National Remembrance", which included the writer in the list of "Ukrainophobes"

According to the museum, eight of the nine signatories of the examination are not specialists in literary studies, so they cannot give competent assessments of Bulgakov and his work.

The museum writes that the experts, being non-professional specialists, simply attributed the views of his characters to Bulgakov.

"The authors attribute the statements of the literary characters of Bulgakov's works to himself and his family in a categorical, emotionally and negatively colored form," the museum writes.

He reminds that Bulgakov's characters not only criticize the Petlyurites, but also talk about "gangs of Reds", "Moscow officers" and "hatred" of Kerensky.

INP experts also ignored the historical context in which Bulgakov wrote. And instead, "Bulgakov's persona is directly united with modern aggressive ideologues and propagandists of Russia" (in its examination, the "Institute" writes that a number of Bulgakov's works "completely resonate with the narratives of current Kremlin propagandists Dugin, Solovyov, Skabeeva").

Employees of the museum - the main experts on the writer in Ukraine - were not invited to the examination.

Next, the museum refutes a number of conclusions about Bulgakov made by the Institute of National Memory.

In particular, the INP writes that the writer deserted from the army of the Ukrainian People's Republic, where he was mobilized, and joined the ranks of the "white" Volunteer Army because of his "devotion to monarchism."

The museum declares that this is a lie, and Bulgakov was also forcibly mobilized into the Volunteer Army. In addition, data about his "devotion to monarchism" are not confirmed by any documents.

The "Institute" also claims that Bulgakov's family came to Kyiv from Russia "for colonial activities." The museum rejects this and writes that the writer's father, Opanas Bulgakov, came to Kyiv to study at the Kyiv Theological Academy. And he created a family already after moving, and all the children of the Bulgakovs were born in Kyiv.

The museum also considers the INP statement that Bulgakov and his family were "annoyed" by the Ukrainian language. His sister Olena chose to study Ukrainian at a pedagogical institute, and the writer's godfather was the historian of Ukrainian literature Mykola Petrov. Bulgakov himself regularly used Ukrainian words and expressions in private correspondence, and in a positive context.

The museum also rejects the "sympathy for the Bolsheviks" attributed to Bulgakov in the INP. "Bulgakov "sympathized" with the Bolsheviks so much that his works stopped being printed and were removed from public libraries as early as 1929," the museum said.

"Neither in the Russian Empire nor in the USSR, Bulgakov was not an employee of the authorized bodies for the implementation of the Russian imperial colonial policy, was not a member of political parties, public movements or organizations that professed this policy, did not carry out such activities personally," the museum writes, contesting the thesis that the writer falls under Ukrainian prohibition norms.

The museum also reminds that Mykhailo Bulgakov is the most recognizable Kyivan in the whole world, and he lived in the Ukrainian capital for 28 years of his life.
