At the checkpoint "Orlovka" (Odesa region), border guards of the Izmail detachment, together with the customs officers, warned an attempt to export the ancient icon of Jesus Christ from Ukraine, dated to the nineteenth century. This was reported by the State Border Service of Ukraine.
During the inspection of the KIA car, which was driven by a 40-year-old citizen of Ukraine, the border guards found an icon hidden among personal belongings. The man did not have any permits that would allow the movement of an object that may have historical or cultural value.
The relic was seized in accordance with the current legislation to the court decision. At the same time, an examination is performed, which should establish the authenticity of the icon and its significance as a cultural heritage.
The border service noted that such attempts are not isolated. Foreign collectors are often interested in buying Ukrainian icons, especially if they are religious or ethnographic.
