The Pustomyty District Court of Lviv region issued a sentence to 50-year-old Igor Chulaevsky, who in July 2024 knocked down a pedestrian on the Kiev-Chop highway near Lviv. The court found him guilty, but instead of real punishment, he appointed a conditional term - one year of the trial.
The accident occurred on July 4, 2024 in the village of Galamliyivka. Chulaevsky, driving a Mitsubishi Outlander , ran into a 78-year-old resident of the Kirovograd region, who was walking on the roadside. An elderly man died on the spot from the injuries.
During the trial, the accused pleaded guilty and asked the court not to punish him strictly. The sentence was announced by Judge Dmitry Kuks, pleading the driver guilty under Part 2 of Art. 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - a violation of traffic rules, which led to the death of a person.
Although the court awarded 3 years of imprisonment, the punishment was replaced by a conditional - 1 year of the term, without deprivation of driver's license. The sentence can still be appealed in the Court of Appeal.
The decision was caused by public resonance, because the relatives of the deceased and the public consider such punishment too mild to be the loss of human life.
