The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has begun assessing various possible scenarios for ending the war in Ukraine through diplomatic means. According to Bloomberg, the discussion of these options is taking place in the context of continued support for Ukraine and taking into account new geopolitical realities.
As noted, Ukraine's allies have shifted their focus from "finding ways to win" to trying to put President Zelensky in a better position to counter Russian offensives or negotiate a possible ceasefire.
“Donald Trump’s impending return to the White House has prompted NATO allies to focus on bolstering political support in the face of a protracted war,” writes Bloomberg.
Meanwhile, Allied governments have begun discussing various scenarios for ending the war, including security guarantees that would protect Ukraine without provoking Putin.
According to one of the sources, Bloomberg, one possible option for a ceasefire is the creation of a demilitarized zone, which would presumably be guarded and patrolled by European troops, a senior NATO official said.
Another Western diplomat noted that these discussions are taking place against the backdrop of an awareness of the instability of the situation in Ukraine, and negotiations on a settlement should begin "in the near future.".
The agency adds that these discussions took place at a time when NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte was trying to focus on increasing arms supplies to Ukraine, putting aside any ceasefire for now.
Let us recall that in the currently known projects for a settlement in Ukraine, which were proposed to Trump by his advisors, there is no clause about sending European troops to Ukraine.
