The National Bank of Ukraine has decided to gradually withdraw from circulation coins of denominations of 1, 2, 5 and 25 kopecks issued before 2003. The purpose of this step is to optimize the nominal series and simplify monetary circulation.
Which coins will be withdrawn and when?
The following coins will be affected by this decision:
- 1 kopeck,
- 2 kopecks,
- 5 kopecks,
- 25 kopecks.
The exact date of the final withdrawal of the coins has not yet been determined. It is known that these coins will be exchangeable for current denominations:
- until the end of martial law,
- within three months after its cancellation.
According to Vitaliy Tkach, editor of the website “Coins-Berries”, one should not hope to get rich from these coins. They have no collector's value due to their large size and being made from ordinary materials.
Only the following are valued:
- coins made of precious metals, such as silver or gold,
- rare specimens that have historical or design uniqueness.
“Ordinary circulation coins will not become valuable even in a hundred years. There are too many of them in circulation, so they will not be rare,” Tkach explained.
If you have old coins, you should use them or exchange them before the expiration date. Storing them “for the future” in the hope of getting rich is a wrong strategy, as they will remain a common means of payment that will lose circulation.
This step by the NBU is another stage in the modernization of Ukraine's monetary system, which should make financial transactions more convenient for citizens and businesses.
