The National Bank of Ukraine has decided to gradually withdraw from circulation coins of denominations of 1, 2, 5 and 25 kopecks, issued before 2003. The purpose of this step is to optimize the nominal series and simplify money circulation.
Which coins will be withdrawn and when?
The following coins will be affected by this decision:
- 1 penny,
- 2 pennies,
- 5 kopecks,
- 25 kopecks.
The exact date of the final withdrawal of the coins has not been determined at this time. It is known that it will be possible to exchange these coins for current denominations:
- until the end of martial law,
- within three months after its cancellation.
According to Vitaly Tkach, the editor of the "Moneta-Yagidka" website, it is not worth hoping for enrichment at the expense of these coins. They have no collection value due to their mass and production from ordinary materials.
Only:
- coins made of precious metals such as silver or gold,
- rare specimens that have historical or design uniqueness.
"Ordinary circulating coins will not become valuable even after a hundred years. There are too many of them in circulation, so they will not be rare," Tkach explained.
If you have old coins, they should be used or exchanged before the specified period ends. Postponing them "for the future" with the hope of getting rich is a wrong strategy, as they will remain a common means of payment that is losing circulation.
This step of the National Bank of Ukraine is another stage in the modernization of the monetary system of Ukraine, which should make financial transactions more convenient for citizens and businesses.
