An inexpensive dish that protects the heart: what is worth knowing about beans

Canned bean is one of the most undervalued dishes that can really help combat high cholesterol. It is not only delicious, accessible and nutritious, but also has beneficial properties for the cardiovascular system.

More than half of the UK's adult population is faced with high cholesterol, fat that is able to block vessels in excess, contributing to the development of strokes and heart attacks. In such cases, in addition to medicines, doctors recommend changing your diet: reduce saturated fats and add more fiber to nutrition.

Scientists of the Harvard School of Public Health indicate: legumes, including white beans (Garikot), contain a lot of soluble fiber, which "binds" cholesterol in the digestive system and removes it from the body.

In addition, such fiber slows down digestion, maintaining a feeling of satiety longer. This makes beans a useful product for people who seek to control weight.

What nutritionists say

The senior nutritionist of the British Heart Fund Victoria Taylor notes that dry or canned legumes without added sugar and salt is a great alternative to meat. Such protein of plant origin reduces the load on the heart and blood vessels.

"Beans, lentils and peas are not only fiber, but also protein and vitamins," Taylor says. "And they are extremely versatile to prepare."

The study published in Journal of Nutrition in 2021 showed that 180 grams of legumes daily reduce the level of "bad" LDL cholesterol. The experiment was attended by people with high cholesterol, who replaced the usual garnish with a mixture of canned beans. In a few weeks, they have decreased both general and "bad" cholesterol.

Canned beans are inexpensive, easy to cook and a useful product that should be added to the daily menu. But if you have problems with cholesterol, be sure to consult your doctor: only a specialist will help you draw up a safe and effective diet.
