Negotiations between Ukraine and Hungary on the rights of national minorities, which were scheduled to take place on May 12, have been postponed at the initiative of the Hungarian side. The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine reported this on its official Facebook page.
It was a regular meeting of expert groups that had been established following previous agreements in Budapest. These groups were to discuss 11 recommendations put forward by Hungary to improve the situation of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine.
The consultations were to take place in Uzhhorod, where a delegation from Kyiv had already arrived. However, the Hungarian side announced the postponement of the event after the arrival of the Ukrainian representatives.
As is known, since last year, Hungary has been insisting on the implementation of 11 points related to the restoration and ensuring of the rights of the Hungarian community, which lives mainly in Transcarpathia. The Hungarian government has stated that support for Ukraine on its path to the European Union will depend on the fulfillment of these requirements.
As of today, no new date for the consultations has been announced. The Ukrainian side has not yet announced the reasons for the postponement, and Budapest is also not publicly commenting on the situation.
