Dutch politician Geert Wilders, who is known for his libertarian views, recently caused outrage with his statements regarding the refugee crisis in the Netherlands. In his posts on social network X (formerly Twitter), Wilders said that the Netherlands could no longer cope with the large number of refugees and that the situation could be solved by sending Ukrainian men in the Netherlands back to Ukraine to fight in the war.
"The Netherlands can no longer cope with this. Our country is already full," Wilders wrote, emphasizing his views on the country's overpopulation and refugee crisis. He added that the solution could be the cancellation of protection for refugees, in particular for Ukrainians, who, in his opinion, should return to Ukraine and help in the protection and reconstruction of their Motherland.
"Ukrainian men who can help protect and rebuild their Motherland should be sent back to Ukraine. This can be done without extending the European Temporary Protection Directive or ending it earlier," added Wilders.
These statements of Wilders became known after his recent meeting with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi on September 7. During the meeting, the issues of the war in Ukraine, support for the Netherlands and corruption in Ukraine were discussed. Wilders also raised the issue of the Nord Stream and the presence of Ukrainian men in the Netherlands, who, he said, should return home.
It should be noted that Geert Wilders, who earlier in 2018 stated that the culprits of the war in Ukraine are not Russia, but the EU, also criticized the policy of the Netherlands regarding the supply of weapons to Ukraine. He believes that the country is focused more on supporting another country than on ensuring security in the Netherlands. Wilders also opposes Ukraine's membership in the EU or NATO.
