Berlin and Washington are actively negotiating Ukraine's Patrioot air defense systems and missiles. This was stated by the official representative of the German government, Stefan Cornellius, Bloomberg and The Guardian reported.
The reason for the negotiations was the intensification of Russia's missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities, as well as the recent decision of the United States to temporarily suspend the transfer of part of the weapons to Ukraine.
On Friday, July 4, a spokeswoman for Chancellor Friedrich Merz asked whether negotiations with Washington were negotiating on Patriot. In response, Cornellius confirmed: "I can say that intense discussions are in this question."
He added that "different ways" are considered to meet the needs of the Ukrainian air defense, in particular the option in which Germany buys rockets in the United States and transmits them to Ukraine.
As Bild wrote earlier, the German government is allegedly negotiating with the US President Donald Trump team on emergency transfer to Ukraine two Patriot systems. According to journalists, Germany is ready to pay for this supply, but expects approval from the new head of Pentagon Pete Hegset.
Bild claims that the corresponding request Germany has sent to the United States a few weeks ago, but the answer has not yet received. At the same time, because of the freezing of some US assistance for Ukraine in the White House, Berlin is afraid that the request can also block.
Ukraine, recall, has repeatedly asked the United States directly for additional Patriot systems, but to no avail. Official Kyiv now hopes for Berlin's mediation.
