German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that Berlin does not rule out the possibility of the participation of the German military as part of the international peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, if such an initiative is implemented. His words are quoted by the German publication Tagesschau .
"We are preparing, we are playing out scenarios, but we are doing it confidentially... Now is not the time to discuss scenarios publicly," the German defense minister said.
Pistorius noted that the answer to the question of military participation in peacekeeping forces will ultimately depend on "what the conditions are."
"If there is a ceasefire and if someone - whoever it is - decides to take peacekeeping measures there with the help of military means, it will depend on the type of mandate, the scope, the demands and the consent of the warring parties," the minister explained.
The publication notes that the opinion of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz differs from Pistorius's statement. During his speech before the Bundestag, Scholz categorically rejected Germany's participation in possible peacekeeping missions in Ukraine.
