Although mushrooms are often considered a source of healthy protein, they are not suitable for everyone, said a PhD and dietitian, drawing attention to the risks for people with gastrointestinal diseases.
According to her, mushrooms do contain protein that the body can absorb. But this process is quite complicated, and for people with chronic stomach diseases – such as gastritis or peptic ulcer – eating mushrooms can be harmful.
“Mushrooms are a good protein food, the protein is digestible. But it is difficult for people who have gastrointestinal diseases: peptic ulcer, gastritis,” the nutritionist explained.
The expert also noted that, despite the presence of dietary fiber in mushrooms, they do not have the same health-promoting effect as regular fiber found in vegetables and grains.
“When people look at the chemical composition of products and see that there is so much dietary fiber in mushrooms, they need to understand that yes, they are there, they are digestible, but mushrooms do not have the positive effect that fiber has on the body,” she added.
The doctor urges caution when consuming mushrooms for those with digestive problems or on a special diet. In such cases, she says, it is better to choose foods that are easier to digest and have a truly positive effect on the intestinal microflora.
