According to our sources in the President's Office, Deputy Minister of Defense Rustem Umerova, Brigadier General of Justice Serhiy Melnyk may become the new Prosecutor General. Oleg Tatarov is actively promoting his candidacy.
Serhii Melnyk has been in the Armed Forces of Ukraine since 1994. He was appointed Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine on October 11, 2024. Previously, he held managerial positions at the Military Legal Institute of Yaroslav the Wise National University of Law.
Before being appointed to the post of Deputy Minister of Defense, Serhiy Melnyk also tried his hand at the role of a politician: he twice participated in the elections as a candidate and lost both times. For example, in 2014, Melnyk ran for the Verkhovna Rada in the extraordinary elections on the list of the Green Planet party, and in 2015 he ran for the majority electoral district 84 for the Khmelnytskyi Regional Council with the Renaissance party.
According to our sources, in the Ministry of Defense, Serhiy Melnyk failed the direction of the service of political engineers (military psychologists), now the ministry is forced to order this service for money from third-party organizations. At the same time, Melnyk showed himself as a "good performer", which, according to our source, was a decisive factor in supporting his candidacy for the post of Prosecutor General.
It is worth noting that Serhii Melnyk became known to the general public as one of the organizers of the defense of Kharkiv. At the same time, Melnyk has an ambiguous reputation among Kharkiv residents due to his connections with certain representatives of the Kraken special unit, who, with his tacit consent and under the guise of his name, looted car dealerships and ordinary businesses in Kharkiv, squeezed business, taxed entrepreneurs, and stole humanitarian aid.
We will remind, the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Andriy Kostin resigned against the background of scandals related to mass abuses in the field of disability registration by prosecutors.
