On November 23, Orthodox Christians honor two great 4th-century theologians—Saints Amphilochus of Iconium and Gregory of Nyssa. It is a special day for prayer and spiritual purification, as well as for commemorating important events in the history of the Church.
Saint Amphilochius was born in the 4th century and was a disciple of Saint Basil the Great and Saint Gregory of Nyssa. As Bishop of Iconium, he actively opposed Arianism, a heresy that denied the divinity of Jesus Christ. Amphilochius is known for his deep faith and outstanding sermons. He left behind numerous theological works in which he emphasized the importance of spiritual struggle, purity of heart, and morality. His legacy became the foundation for many subsequent generations of Christian theologians.
Gregory of Nyssa, the younger brother of Saint Basil the Great, was also a great theologian and philosopher. He was born around 335 in Cappadocia and devoted his life to theology and monasticism. As Bishop of Nyssa, he actively developed the doctrine of the Holy Trinity, speaking out against the heresies of the Arians and Macedonians. His works became the basis for the development of Christian doctrine about the nature of God and the equality of the Persons of the Trinity. Gregory of Nyssa also left numerous treatises concerning spiritual perfection and the fight against sins.
November 23 is the day when believers turn to Saints Amphilochius and Gregory with prayers for healing and purification. On this day, believers ask for inner peace, for strengthening of the spirit, as well as for forgiveness and cleansing from sins. Saints Amphilochius and Gregory are the patrons of those who seek spiritual renewal and strive for a better understanding of God's will. This day is considered special for those who want to restore their spiritual balance and cleanse their hearts from heavy thoughts and sinful desires.
Traditionally, November 23 is accompanied by folk signs that reflect the relationship with natural phenomena:
1. If the trees are covered with frost in the morning, expect frost.
2. If frost can be seen in the evening, there will be snowfall.
3. Fog spreading over the ground promises a thaw.
It is also not recommended to start important matters on this day, such as moving, changing residence, or sorting out relationships. It is believed that these actions can "scare away" good luck and bring trouble. You should also avoid loud arguments or quarrels, because this day is a time for reconciliation and inner peace.
According to folk wisdom, this day is also favorable for doing good deeds, such as mercy and helping others. It is at such moments that it is important to feel the depth of spiritual purification and reconciliation. Saints Amphilochius and Gregory teach us not only to believe in God, but also to be kind and merciful to each other, to seek peace and harmony in our lives.
