In the Odessa region, law enforcement officers have uncovered a criminal scheme for the illegal disposal of toxic waste, which resulted in the contamination of over 2,200 sq. m of land. The case involves a deputy of the Safyanivka village council and four of his accomplices.
According to the Odessa Regional Prosecutor's Office, the suspects organized an enterprise that was supposed to service ships. However, instead of properly disposing of the sewage containing petroleum products, the waste was simply dumped at a solid waste landfill in the Izmail district.
To hide the crime, the perpetrators signed a contract with a licensed company to dispose of hazardous substances, but in fact no disposal was carried out.
The illegal activity caused environmental damage of over UAH 2.4 million. All suspects have already been remanded in custody with the possibility of bail.
The investigation was conducted by prosecutors of the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor's Office of the Odessa Region together with police investigators and employees of the Strategic Investigations Department.
