Olive leaves: a little-known source of antioxidants for the heart, blood pressure and metabolism

Most of us know about the health benefits of olive oil, but few pay attention to another part of this Mediterranean plant—the olive leaf. And for good reason: it is a powerful source of antioxidants and can positively affect blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood glucose, and even cognitive function.

This was revealed by Evangeline Mandzioris, a professor of nutrition at the University of South Australia. In an interview with The Conversation, she noted that the main bioactive substance in the leaves, oleuropein, is found in much higher quantities than in olives or oil. This antioxidant, as well as hydroxytetrosol, luteolin, apigenin and verbascoside, can reduce oxidative stress - a harmful process that contributes to the development of chronic diseases, including cancer and cardiovascular disease.

A review of 12 studies involving 819 people found that olive leaf extract helped lower blood pressure and improve blood lipid profiles — especially in those who already had high blood pressure. Study participants took the extract in capsule form (250 mg to 5 g per day) or in foods such as bread.

In addition to the heart effects, other benefits have been reported, including improved glucose control, weight loss, bone and joint health, and cognitive function. However, the results were not always consistent, which the researcher believes is due to different doses, forms of administration, and duration of administration.

Olive leaves can be used as a tea or added to dishes. However, due to the bitter taste, consumption in this form can be unpleasant. On the other hand, extracts are actively added to baked goods, which not only enriches the products with antioxidants, but also, according to reviews, makes the taste more pleasant.

However, Manzioris emphasizes that despite all its benefits, olive leaf extract is not a magic pill. It may be beneficial for people with high blood pressure, diabetes, or impaired lipid profiles, but it should be used only after consulting a doctor. And most importantly, no supplement can replace a varied and balanced diet rich in plant foods.
