Online baptism: how the Chernihiv church adapts to modern conditions

The church in Chernihiv is successfully integrating the latest technologies into its rituals. Priests have begun practicing online baptisms, adapting to the challenges caused by the war.

This is reported by the online publication Cheline.

The rector of the Cathedral of the Holy Great Martyr Catherine, Father Roman Kinyk, says that this is due to the fact that one of the parents or godparents is at the front and is unable to come to his relatives.

"There are times when parents want to take the godchild, but the godchild is now at the front, fighting for Ukraine. There were times when they simply turned on the phone, when the godchild got in touch, and here, on the spot, was the godchild's wife, holding the phone, and he was also present at the baptism. He was present, he had the opportunity to say those words that godparents say for the child, which the child cannot say for himself," says the priest.

Father Roman says that this method of baptizing a child can be considered complete, because the necessary religious canons of conducting the sacrament are observed.

"He was directly involved spiritually and can be considered truly baptized, because when he arrives, he will be able to take the baby in his arms and share his love and warmth with the very baby who was baptized," said Father Roman (Kinyk), rector of the Cathedral of the Holy Great Martyr Catherine (OCU).

Let us remind you that the church does not set an optimal date or age for the baptism of a child. According to the Bible, by undergoing the sacrament at a conscious age, a person can fully understand its meaning and make a conscious choice. Jesus Christ himself was baptized at the age of 30, so the church will not refuse baptism to either a child or an adult.
