The UN calls on Russia and Ukraine to "immediate de-escalation steps"

The United Nations (UN) issued a statement condemning "attacks on civilian objects" in the context of the recent hostilities between Russia and Ukraine. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, called on both sides of the conflict to take "immediate steps to de-escalate."

The statement noted that the alarming escalation of hostilities has resulted in the killing of dozens of civilians in Ukraine and Russia. The High Commissioner emphasized that international humanitarian law prohibits indiscriminate attacks and attacks on civilian objects.

The UN calls on the parties to the conflict to take "immediate measures for de-escalation", as well as to ensure the protection of civilians and respect for international law. The statement arose in the context of the latest massive Russian missile attacks in Ukraine.

It is noted that similar calls for de-escalation and compliance with international law have already been made before, but the conflict continues to gain momentum, causing serious turbulence in the region.
