New scientific evidence suggests that regular consumption of orange juice can significantly affect the body's functioning at the gene level. A study published in the journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research found that people who drank about two glasses of 100% orange juice daily for two months had changes in the activity of more than 1,700 genes related to inflammation, vascular health, and fat metabolism.
Researchers from the US and Brazil studied the immune cells of 20 participants and found that regular consumption of the juice reduced the activity of inflammatory genes and improved signals related to the functioning of the vascular system. In people with normal body weight, the changes were more pronounced in genes that regulate inflammation, while in overweight people, the changes were more pronounced in genes responsible for fat metabolism and energy use.
The effects of orange juice are attributed to flavonoids, antioxidants found in citrus fruits. These compounds are known for their ability to support the cardiovascular system and protect cells from inflammation.
Scientists emphasize that daily consumption of natural orange juice can be a useful addition to the diet, but does not replace a healthy lifestyle and balanced diet.
