Following the election of Donald Trump as US president in 2024, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán held several phone conversations with the newly elected leader. The main topic of their discussions was the situation in Ukraine, which remains one of the most pressing issues in world politics.
This was reported by the Hungarian service of Radio Liberty, citing sources.
"The new US president asked the Hungarian prime minister to express his opinion on several specific issues related to the Ukrainian settlement," the publication reports.
"It has never happened before that a US president has held talks with the Prime Minister of Hungary several times within a month," the media outlet adds.
According to him, Trump was primarily interested in what Orban thought about a quick end to the war in Ukraine and what timetable he saw for a settlement. According to another source, the president-elect was interested in Orban's assessment of Russia's ability to continue the war and how resilient Putin's government was to the challenges of war.
The publication recalls that the Hungarian Prime Minister previously said that Russia has incomparably more resources to continue the war than Ukraine does, which is "close to Trump's ideas.".
According to a government source, following these talks, Orban may propose another peacekeeping mission, which will take place on the eve of the December EU summit. The essence of this mission is not reported, but experts interviewed by the publication suggest that the Hungarian Prime Minister may present some proposals to the parties on behalf of Trump.
