After the election of Donald Trump to the post of President of the United States in 2024, the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, held several phone conversations with the newly elected leader. The main topic of their discussions was the situation in Ukraine, which remains one of the most pressing issues of world politics.
This is reported by the Hungarian Radio Liberty service with reference to sources.
"The new US president asked the Hungarian prime minister to express his opinion on several specific issues related to the Ukrainian settlement," the newspaper reports.
"It has never happened before that the president of the USA held talks with the prime minister of Hungary several times during a month," adds the media.
According to him, Trump was primarily interested in what Orbán thinks about a quick end to the war in Ukraine and what settlement schedule he sees. According to another source, the president-elect was learning how Orban assesses Russia's ability to continue the war and how resilient Putin's government is to the challenges of war.
The publication recalls that the Hungarian prime minister previously said that Russia has incomparably more resources to continue the war than Ukraine, which is "close to Trump's ideas."
According to a source in the government, based on the results of these conversations, Orbán may propose another peacekeeping mission, which will take place on the eve of the December EU summit. What will be the essence of this mission is not reported, but the experts interviewed by the publication assume that the Prime Minister of Hungary may present some proposals to the parties on behalf of Trump.
