Educational reform in Ukraine: will students have the right to choose a high school?

The Ministry of Education of Ukraine announced the introduction of a reform of specialized secondary education, which will allow students to choose their educational path, courses and subjects depending on their interests and needs.

Starting in 2027, Ukrainian schoolchildren will have the opportunity to individualize their studies in high school. The main goal of the reform is to expand choices for students and adapt educational programs to their needs and interests.

The benefits for students will be greater autonomy in choosing a field of study, courses and subjects to suit their career and personal preferences. In particular, schools will actively help students identify their strengths, interests and opportunities in the labor market.

Implementation of the reform will involve a review of systems and approaches to the organization of the educational process. Starting in 2025, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (MES) will start piloting models of profiling, curricula and materials in 25 selected secondary schools, which will be tested.

The reform of specialized secondary education is of great importance for the future of Ukraine, as it is aimed at preparing students for a successful career and life, providing them with the opportunity to choose an educational path in accordance with their individual needs and goals. Such a reform will also improve the quality of education, making it more inclusive and student-oriented.
