The number of Kyiv residents has grown significantly over the past decade. According to Olga Altunina, head of the council for internally displaced persons at the Kyiv City State Administration, as of 2024, the capital will have about 3.7 million residents.
For comparison, according to the latest official statistics, provided back in 2014, the population of Kyiv was 2.8 million.
The population estimate for 2024 is based on mobile operator traffic analytics and data on internally displaced persons. According to Altunina, 425,600 people in Kyiv are internally displaced persons who arrived from other regions of Ukraine due to the war.
The growth of the capital's population creates new challenges for infrastructure, healthcare, housing and social services. In addition, there is a national trend towards population aging, which, combined with migration, may exacerbate demographic and economic problems, including the burden on the pension system.
However, Kyiv continues to be the main center of attraction for Ukrainians seeking a safer environment and more opportunities.
