An emergency operation was performed at the Ternopil Regional Clinical Hospital: the patient's heart was removed to remove a tumor from the chest.
This is the first operation of this type in Ukraine, which concerns sarcoma of the posterior wall of the left atrium, and it was performed by the method of autotransplantation. Information about this was made public in the Department of Health Protection of the Ternopil Regional State Administration.
The patient, a 45-year-old soldier who was wounded in the front and has a high leg amputation, was diagnosed by doctors with severe mitral regurgitation. A tumor was discovered during a planned operation.
Ternopil doctors explained that the operation lasted 3 hours and included two stages. First, the heart was removed from the patient's chest, the parts of the tumor left in the chest were removed, and a new posterior wall of the left atrium was formed from bovine pericardium, to which all the pulmonary veins were sutured. The second stage involved working with the heart itself, removing part of the mitral valve and the left atrium that were affected by the sarcoma, and restoring the geometry of the left atrium, also using bovine pericardium, as well as installing a new mitral valve.
Currently, the patient's condition is assessed as satisfactory and he is undergoing rehabilitation and specialized treatment.
This operation is another proof of the high professionalism of Ukrainian doctors. The Romodanov Institute of Neurosurgery also deserves gratitude for saving the life of another soldier.
Another story is about Serhii Ishchenko, a defender who went to the front in 2022 and got into a difficult situation due to bureaucratic obstacles. After the operation performed on February 5, which is considered to be the most difficult brain operation, Serhii has already been discharged from the hospital and is in the rehabilitation stage.
