Two Ukrainian men of military age attempted to avoid mobilization in Poland by swimming across the Western Bug River. However, they were detained by Polish border guards and extradited to Ukraine. The Polish government is still considering possible options for further resolution of this situation.
One of the detainees is a 31-year-old resident of Sumy region, and the other is a 26-year-old native of Donetsk region. The Poles handed them over to Ukrainian border guards, who have already drawn up administrative protocols for them and handed them summonses to appear before military mobilization authorities. The punishment for violating the border will be decided by the court.
Although these Ukrainians escaped the worst, the story highlights the risks of illegal border crossings. In recent years, about 30 people have died trying to swim across the Tisza River to avoid mobilization. Meanwhile, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine has increased its staff by 15,000, preparing new units to control the state border.
