Police of the Poltava region stopped an attempt to illegally sell a unique archeological treasure. Due to the intervention of law enforcement officers, three extremely rare Fibules of the V century could be removed, which could disappear without a trace in the black market. Artifacts have already been transferred to the National Museum of Ukrainian History, where they will be given proper scientific evaluation and preservation.
According to the museum experts, Fibula found - a real sensation for archeology of Eastern Europe. Two silver fasteners are decorated with a sophisticated comb with numerous decorative buttons. Such artifacts have not yet been recorded in scientific circulation, which suggests it is a unique example of the transition period of the Kiev archaeological culture, when jewelry was made not from bronze, but from more valuable materials.
Third Fibula - a large round clasp, which was once mounted with silver - belongs to the traditional features of the Kiev archaeological culture of the III - V centuries. At the same time, two other decorations, such as bicolosty fibles, were widespread in the Northern Black Sea, which indicates the cultural exchange and migration influences of the time.
According to the researchers, the appearance of silver fibulae can be associated with migration processes, in particular with the movement of the Gothic tribes, which, after the Hun invasion in 375-376, retreated deep into the territory of modern Ukraine.
The treasure was removed as a result of an investigation initiated by the National Museum of Ukrainian History. Artifacts were found within the Poltava region, withdrawn staff of the Lochwitz department of the Mirgorod district police department.
The National Museum also explained that the fibulae were not only fasteners for clothing, but also had a protected, cult value. They consisted of a decorative shield and a needle with a needle, which was pinned, in particular, by raincoats.
This rescued treasure will not only replenish the museum collection, but can also substantially rewrite the ideas of scientists about the early stages of Slavic history and the cultural connections of Eastern Europe in the era of the Great Migration of Peoples.
