Since the beginning of the law on the parole of convicts for the sake of service in the army, the ranks of the Defense Forces of Ukraine have already supplemented more than 8,000 former prisoners. This was announced by the Head of the Department of Penalty of the Ministry of Justice Yevhen Gorobets.
According to him, about 900 more applications are currently under consideration. At the same time, some of the mobilized expired people have already been awarded state and departmental awards for military service.
“To date, more than 8,000 men and women have been supplemented by combat units. Not only did these people become part of the Armed Forces - they prove their devotion daily at the front, ”the sparrow said.
Most of the fighters from the former prisoners serve in the following parts:
-
1st separate assault battalion "da Vinci";
-
225th separate assault regiment;
-
92th separate storm brigade;
-
93th Mechanized Brigade "Cold Yar";
-
95th separate landing brigade;
-
The third assault team, as well as other units of defense forces.
The law that allowed the mobilization of certain categories of convicts was adopted in May 2024, and the first volunteers from the colonies in August of that year were released. On May 8, 2024, they were allowed to join the Armed Forces under the conditions of professional, medical and psychological selection, in accordance with the Criminal Enforcement Code.
In January 2025, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the official procedure for passing the Military Medical Commission and the procedure for taking prisoners. Earlier, as of July 2024, more than 3,000 convicts have already taken advantage of joining the Armed Forces. Another 27,000 can meet the criteria for service.
Thus, the law on parole not only became an alternative for persons deprived of liberty, but also turned some of them into real defenders of the state.
