In the conditions of a full -scale war, Ukraine considers the possibility of mobilizing part of the prisoners to the Armed Forces. According to Deputy Minister of Justice Yevgeny Pikalov, we are talking about 20-30% of the total number of convicts - this can be an important reserve for the country's defense capability.
As of today, more than 8 300 convicts have already joined the Armed Forces, and another thousand applications are under consideration. Among the mobilized - and about 100 women.
"According to our forecasts, about 20-30% of convicted in Ukraine can take advantage of this opportunity and stand up for the state," Pikalov said in an interview with Ukrinform .
He stressed that it is not only about additional replenishment of the army, but also a step towards re -socialization of convicts. All applications for the service are inspected, the process is controlled by the Ministry of Justice and the State Criminal Enforcement Service.
At the same time, there are categories of convicts who will not be able to join the Armed Forces. These include persons convicted of:
-
terrorism;
-
corruption crimes;
-
sexual crimes;
-
Crimes against national security.
In addition, people with serious health problems are not involved in the service.
According to statistics, there are currently 37,000 convicted and detention in Ukraine. Of these, 57% are sentenced for property crimes, and another 11% for illegal drug trafficking. These categories are a potential target group for mobilization into the army.
