Fire at the Zaporizhzhya NPP: what happened and what is the situation at the facility

Yesterday evening, the Head of the Nikopol District State Administration Yevhen Yevtushenko reported on the fire on the territory of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, which is under the control of the Russian occupation forces. According to him, tires could have been set on fire at the power station, but the details of the incident were unknown.

Zelenskyi also showed footage of the fire at the Zaporizhzhia NPP.

"Energodar We note from Nikopol that the Russian occupiers started a fire on the territory of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

So far, the radiation indicators are normal," said the President of Ukraine.

The Russian "management" of the station told the mass media that there were no operational violations. All power units of the NPP are still disconnected.

Subsequently, the Russian-appointed "authority" of the Zaporizhzhia region blamed the ZSU for the fire at the Zaporizhzhia NPP.

"As a result of the shelling of the city of Energodar by the Armed Forces, a fire occurred at the facility of cooling systems of the ZNPP," said the "governor" Yevhen Balytskyi. According to him, there is no threat of an explosion or other consequences. The radiation background is normal. The fire is being extinguished.

The Russian Federation also claims that the cooling systems that were hit are far from the power units.

The IAEA transmits a message from the Russians about a drone strike on a cooling tower (cooling unit) of the Zaporizhzhya NPP.

The station's "representative" appointed by the Russian Federation also stated that the damage to the cooling installation was the most serious in the entire war.

At night, the fire on the territory of the Zaporizhzhya NPP was extinguished.

This was reported by the Russian "management" of the station, and this morning was confirmed by the head of Dnipropetrovsk OVA Lysak.

The IAEA reported yesterday that their employees heard an explosion at the station on the eve of the fire.

"The IAEA team reported hearing an explosion today, at the same time that the ZNPP informed them that a drone had likely crashed into one of the plant's two cooling towers," the agency said in a statement.

The IAEA adds that the damage to the cooling towers "does not have a direct impact on the safety of the six stopped power units."

We will remind you that yesterday Zelensky accused Russia of setting fire to the station. Yevtushenko, the head of the Nikopol RDA, said that the Russians "set tires on fire" in one of the cooling towers.

At the same time, the Russian Federation itself declares an attack by a Ukrainian drone on a cooling tower, and this position is also mentioned by the IAEA.
