Usually, when it comes to the richest Ukrainians, people think of modern oligarchs. However, the real record holder in terms of wealth lived in the 16th century - Prince Vasyl-Konstantyn Ostrozky. Historian Oleksandr Alferov spoke about this, emphasizing that he is a true "tycoon of the era" who changed the course of Ukrainian history.
A descendant of the famous commander Konstantin Ostrozky, Prince Vasyl-Konstantyn inherited not only the family name, but also colossal estates. He owned 80 cities, 40 castles and over 2,700 villages. His annual income was about 19 million zlotys - the equivalent of over 50 tons of gold per year. Even in modern realities, such figures are impressive.
Ostrohsky was distinguished not only by his economic power, but also by his cultural activity. He became a patron of science and education. It was with his support that the Ostroh Academy appeared - the first higher educational institution in Ukrainian lands, which became a symbol of Orthodox resistance to Catholicization by the Polish crown.
Another of his achievements was the Ostroh Bible, the first complete edition in Church Slavonic. It became not only a religious but also a cultural phenomenon that shaped the spiritual self-awareness of Ukrainians.
Thus, Prince Vasyl-Konstantyn Ostrozky remains not only a historical possessor of unheard-of wealth, but also a figure who combined political power, enlightenment, and national dignity. His figure is a reminder that true wealth is measured not only in gold, but also in traces in history.
