The United Nations was forced to suspend some of its humanitarian programs in Ukraine by reducing international assistance funding. According to UN Secretary General Anthony Guterrish, US President Donald Trump's administration has decided to reduce the costs of international initiatives, which led to the stopping of some important projects, including financial assistance for Ukrainians. About one million people in critical regions of Ukraine used this care program.
Guterrish noted that reducing funding is contrary to the interests of the United States, as it can affect stability in Ukraine, where humanitarian assistance is an important factor in survival for many citizens affected by the war. The UN Secretary General has hope that this decision would be revised and international assistance would be restored.
Washington explained their decision to view external assistance, which should meet the national interests of the United States. Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that the United States should focus its support on achieving its own strategic goals, which has also influenced the reduction of humanitarian initiative funding.
The US Agency for International Development (USAID) is also now being reduced. This means that Ukrainians who have received financial assistance through these initiatives will be temporarily left without payments, and further support will depend on the possibility of reviewing this decision by Washington or on attracting other donors to finance humanitarian programs.
