The progress of the Russian Federation near Avdiivka slowed down, but the onslaught intensified in the area of Chasovoy Yar

A report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) notes that over the past few days, Russian troops have not been able to continue advancing in the Avdiivka area. However, in another direction, from Bakhmut to Chasy Yar, the Russians mounted more attacks than in the Avdiiv direction.

According to the summary of the General Staff of Ukraine on April 30, during the day, the defense forces stopped 47 attacks by Russian troops in the Avdiivka area and 57 in the direction of Bakhmut-Chasiv Yar. However, more attacks were recorded on Chasiv Yar than was reported by Ukrainian sources.

ISW representatives noted that one-day reports do not allow to draw conclusions about the general trend. However, information from the General Staff indicates that the Russians slightly slowed down the rate of shelling west of Avdiivka, but increased attacks near Chasy Yar, which was already noted in previous reports.

It is noted that since about April 20, Russian forces focused on the development of tactical actions near the villages of Ocheretine and Novokalynovoy to the northwest of Avdiyivka. However, as of April 30, progress in this direction has slowed down.

Although Russian military bloggers claimed Russian troops were advancing in various directions, ISW had no confirmed visual evidence of these claims. In particular, Russian bloggers claimed the advance of troops north of Novokalynovo and south of Keramik, as well as in the Ocheretiny area. However, information about this is not confirmed by ISW observations.

The ISW report also noted continued fighting in other directions, including northwest of Avdiivka near the villages of Arkhangelske, Sokil and Solovyove, west of Avdiivka near Umansky, and southwest of Avdiivka near Netailovo.

The report also notes that units of various military formations operate in the area of the villages of Novokalynove and Keramik:

  • 132nd Motorized Rifle Brigade (1st Army Corps "DNR") and 35th Motorized Rifle Brigade (41st Combined Arms Army, Central Military District);
  • 30th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade (2 AK, TsVO), advancing in the direction of Novooleksandrivka;
  • 27th motorized rifle division (2 AK), operating in the Solovyovo, Berdychiv and Semenivka areas;
  • 74th separate motorized rifle brigade (41 AK), which operates near Berdychi;
  • 114th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade (1 AK "DPR"), operating west of Orlivka.
