Former prosecutor Bohdan Bezkorovaynyi, who was accused of committing a criminal offense, left Ukraine after his case was transferred to court. In July 2022, the accused crossed the border through the Vylok checkpoint in Transcarpathia, although at that time he was already a defendant in criminal proceedings.
For a year, Bezkorovaynyi did not appear at court hearings, and his lawyer claimed that he did not know where he was. Later, it turned out that the former official lives in the United States of America. His absence from Ukraine was explained by “family circumstances” that allegedly forced him to stay abroad for a long time.
The court allowed the defendant to participate in the hearings remotely — via video link from the Consulate General of Ukraine in New York, as well as using the EasyCon system. It was in this format that Bezkorovaynyi gave his testimony.
Based on the results of the case, the court sentenced the former prosecutor to one year in prison. However, the sentence has not yet entered into force and can be appealed. Thus, Bohdan Bezkorovaynyi effectively avoided real punishment - by remaining abroad and not being in custody.
