On the night of June 1, Russia carried out a massive attack on Ukraine. Tu-95MS bombers launched cruise missiles, there were also missile launches (probably "Calibre") from the sea, and "Shakhed" drones attacked rear regions throughout the night. For the first time in a year, rockets reached Transcarpathia, Lviv and Stryi were under attack.
Energy infrastructure was the target of the attack, Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko said. According to him, the destruction of objects was recorded in the Zaporizhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kirovohrad and Ivano-Frankivsk regions.
Poland raised F-16 fighter jets due to threat of attack.
After 3:30 in the morning, missiles from the Tu-95MS entered the airspace of Ukraine in several waves and headed towards Kyiv and the central part of the country. Calibers from the south also headed to the center and west.
Part of the "Shakheds" that reached the west of Ukraine at that time reached Lviv Oblast and Ivano-Frankiv Oblast and headed through the Carpathians to Transcarpathia, the Air Force and the head of Lviv Oblast reported.
Some "Shakhed" tried to attack Stryi, where important gas facilities are located.
According to the Air Force, most of the missiles were headed west from the center of Ukraine.
The authorities of a number of regions reported on the work of air defense, explosions were heard in Lviv. In the Vinnytsia region, the debris of a downed drone caused a fire at a critical infrastructure facility, the head of the region reported.
Later, the Air Force reported that the missiles had reached the Lviv region, some of them had flown to Transcarpathia and were headed for Mukachevo. The military also announced an attack by Strya missiles.
In the morning, the missiles reached Ivano-Frankivsk, the Air Force reported, after which they headed for Burshtyn.
Some rockets threatened the suburbs of Lviv. The head of the region, Maksym Kozytskyi, informed about the danger for the Pustomites. The sounds of explosions could be heard as the rockets passed near the city.
At 4:45 a.m., the Air Force and the head of the Lviv Oblast reported a threat to Lviv itself - a whole group of missiles headed there, but they also turned towards Stryi.
After 5:25, an air raid warning was sounded almost all over Ukraine. But in the Lviv region, the danger lasted until 6:10 in the morning.
"It was very long and difficult. The Air Force is the best," wrote Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovy.
During the last two massive Russian attacks on Ukraine, the main target was not only the energy facilities, but also Starokostantyniv in Khmelnytskyi region, where the strategic military airfield is located. Experts assume that this is related to the preparation for the appearance of F-16 fighters in Ukraine.
The main target of almost all of Russia's spring attacks on the rear regions of Ukraine remained the energy infrastructure. Moscow is trying to destroy the country's energy system by attacking thermal and hydroelectric plants. As a result, significant problems with electricity supply have already arisen in Ukraine, and electricity blackout schedules have been implemented across the country for several weeks. Such interruptions may last until winter.
