Russian occupation forces have achieved a significant tactical success by advancing onto Route O-0532 near Vugledar in the Donetsk region. The operation was aimed at cutting one of Ukraine's key land lines of communication, which connects Vugledar with Kostyantynivka. According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), this Russian move could have serious consequences for Ukraine's defense capabilities in the region.
This is stated in a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
The enemy has entered the O-0532 highway to cut the Ukrainian land communication line connecting Vugledar and Kostyantynivka, near Donetsk.
ISW notes that Russian sources have long considered blocking the highway and disrupting Ukrainian ground lines of communication (GLOCs) in Vugledar to be a key tactical objective southwest of Donetsk. This would supposedly allow the invaders to force Ukrainian forces to withdraw from positions in and around Vugledar.
The report also notes that Russian forces have recently intensified offensive operations southwest of Donetsk and conducted several costly mechanized assaults in the area.
“The Russian advance to the Vugledar-Kostyantynovka highway is likely a result of this increased offensive effort, but Russian advances southwest of Donetsk continue to be gradual. Ukrainian forces have other GLOCs leading to Vugledar, and the closure of the O-0532 highway does not significantly impair Ukraine’s ability to hold and supply positions in the Vugledar area,” ISW emphasizes.
The occupiers advanced near Toretsk and continued offensive operations in the area on August 2.
