Minister of Ecology Svitlana Hrynchuk reported that the movement of polluted water from the Desna and Seim rivers towards Kyiv has slowed significantly, and in some places has even stopped. This is positive news, but the threat to water intakes and the ecosystem still remains.
“We are observing that the polluted spot is no longer so saturated. We hope that if the polluted water reaches the water intakes, particularly in the Kyiv region, the water treatment plants of the water utilities will be able to cope with this problem,” said Grinchuk.
It was previously predicted that polluted water from the Desna River would reach Kyiv on September 10.
The environmental inspection also reports that there is no threat to water intakes. Currently, the water in the Desna is being enriched with oxygen using special installations.
In the Seimas, the water condition is starting to improve, no new cases of fish deaths have been detected. Isolated cases of fish plague have been recorded in the Desna. In total, about 26 tons of dead fish were collected in both rivers during the emergency situation liquidation.
