According to the spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Heorhiy Tykhy, Ukraine supports Italy's proposal for a worldwide ceasefire during the Winter Olympic Games (February 6-22, 2026), while emphasizing that it is ready for a ceasefire even earlier.
Tykhyi stated that Russia has repeatedly violated Olympic truces in the past, initiating hostilities during the Olympics, so Ukraine clearly indicates the need for real diplomatic steps to ensure security. He emphasized that Ukraine supported the previous US initiative for a truce, but Russia ignored it.
The spokesman noted that if Russia needs an "Olympic truce," then "let it be an Olympic one," but Kyiv insists that the ceasefire take place as early as possible during the Olympics. According to him, the Italian minister's statement is intended to stimulate Russia to serious diplomacy and real steps towards peace.
When Ukraine advocates for a ceasefire, it emphasizes not only declarations, but also control mechanisms and guarantees that could ensure compliance with the ceasefire. The Foreign Ministry emphasized Kyiv's readiness for dialogue and for concrete steps that could avoid escalation during a major international event.
