Russian forces have intensified strikes on Kherson, focusing fire on critical infrastructure and key transport routes, CNN reports, citing its own sources and assessments by local residents.
One of the main targets of the attacks was the bridge connecting the main part of the city to Korabel Island. According to Western analysts, the aim of the attack on this object was to divide Kherson in half and make it difficult to move between parts of the city.
A series of airstrikes on Sunday severely damaged the city, forcing local authorities to evacuate about 1,800 civilians from the island. Rescue workers said Russian drones did not attack convoys of people during the first three days of the evacuation, an unusual pause after the long-running shelling of civilian infrastructure.
CNN analysts believe that the growing pressure on Kherson may indicate Russia's intentions to regain control over the city and region, which the Ukrainian Armed Forces liberated in November 2022 during a counteroffensive.
Local authorities also warn that the strikes on infrastructure may be part of a broader Russian plan to increase offensive pressure in the southern direction. The threat of retaking Kherson persists, and the situation in the region remains tense.
