On the morning of September 2, Kyiv and the region were the target of a massive missile strike by Russia. This was reported by Serhiy Bratchuk, spokesman for the Ukrainian Volunteer Army "South", in a commentary on Channel 24. According to him, the Russian troops changed their shelling tactics, which indicates new threats to Ukraine's air defense system.
New shelling tactics
According to Bratchuk, the air defense forces successfully destroyed more than a dozen cruise missiles, about ten ballistic missiles, and one strike drone. This indicates that the Ukrainian air defense system withstood the strain despite the massive attacks.
However, Russian forces have changed their tactics, employing combined strikes that involve the use of large numbers of Shahed drones along with various types of missiles — aerodynamic, ballistic, and others. This strategy is designed to exhaust Ukrainian air defenses, creating additional difficulties for effective interception of threats.
Changing the trajectory of missiles
In particular, a new feature of the attacks is that the Russian missiles change their flight path. At first, they fly in one direction, and then change course, returning to Kyiv. This complicates the task for the air defense system and increases the effectiveness of the attacks.
Missile and drone stocks
Bratchuk also noted that the Russian troops have prepared for such massive strikes, which indicates a significant stock of missiles and drones. Ukrainian intelligence reports an increase in the production of Kh-101 missiles in Russia. At the same time, 90% of the components for these missiles, including electronics, are supplied to Russia through China, which receives them from Western countries.
This news highlights the ongoing challenges facing Ukraine’s air defense system. Changing Russian attack tactics and the use of new technologies are jeopardizing the security of Kyiv and other regions of Ukraine, requiring further improvements to defense systems and strategies.
