Politico reports , citing sources in Ukrainian intelligence services.
Concerns are growing amid active Western diplomatic efforts to end the fighting and prepare for a peace summit in Switzerland. However, Ukrainian intelligence officials say the Kremlin could resort to another escalation to show its strength and ignore calls for peace.
“On Saturday, intelligence officials in Kyiv expressed concern that Russia could launch new airstrikes on the Ukrainian capital in the coming days, in a grim response to Western peace efforts,” the Politico .
In recent weeks, Russia has significantly intensified air strikes on infrastructure in central and western Ukraine. Kyiv has remained relatively “quiet,” but the capital is home to key political, diplomatic, and strategic centers, making it a prime target for demonstrative strikes.
Analysts suggest that a new wave of attacks could be timed to coincide with symbolic dates or international events, in particular the peace summit in Switzerland, which is planned for June.
Ukrainian air defense forces are already on high alert. Despite the lack of modern interception equipment, Kyiv continues to effectively counter most missile and drone attacks.
However, the risks remain high. Any weakening of the defenses, or a massive attack with a large number of "Daggers" or "Shaheeds", could lead to casualties and destruction.
As Politico , a potential strike on Kyiv is not only a military action, but also a political message. Thus, the Kremlin could try to disrupt international initiatives for a peaceful settlement or influence public opinion both in Ukraine and in the West.
Ukraine once again calls on partners to increase the supply of air defense equipment and put pressure on Moscow through diplomatic channels to reduce risks to civilians.
