Today in the Orthodox calendar falls the day of memory of the holy Hieromartyr Ignatius the God-bearer - one of the most revered figures of early Christianity. He lived at the end of the 1st - beginning of the 2nd century and is considered a disciple of the Apostle John the Theologian. Together with other spiritual mentors of that time, Ignatius belongs to the Apostolic Fathers - people who directly communicated with the apostles of Christ.
Saint Ignatius was the bishop of Antioch, one of the key centers of the Christian world of that period. It was here that the followers of Christ first began to be called Christians. He actively preached among pagans and Jews, emphasizing the unity of the Church, the need for obedience to the bishop, and the spiritual cohesion of the community.
Ignatius is credited with seven epistles to the Christian communities in Rome, Ephesus, Smyrna, Philadelphia, Magnesia, and a letter to Bishop Polycarp. In his texts, he called on believers to love, humility, patience, and unwavering faith, especially in times of persecution.
During the reign of Emperor Trajan, during another wave of persecution of Christians, Ignatius was arrested. He was transferred from Antioch to Rome, where he suffered a martyr's death - according to legend, he was given to be torn apart by wild beasts in the Colosseum. The saint perceived his death as a testimony of faith and complete union with Christ.
