The Security Service of Ukraine conducted a brilliant operation to detain two Russian agents who were trying to organize sabotage in the Odessa region. Their goal was to damage the railway track, which could have led to a freight train accident. Thanks to the promptness of the Ukrainian special services, the tragedy was prevented.
The perpetrators turned out to be two local young men, only 17 and 18 years old. As the SBU found out, they were looking for a quick way to make money through Telegram channels. There, they were recruited by a representative of the Russian special services, who gave them clear instructions for carrying out the crime.
The plan was to damage the railway track by dismantling part of it and inserting metal reinforcement into the rail joints. The aim of the attack was not only to harm transport logistics, but also to create panic among the local population.
The operation to prevent the terrorist attack was carried out at night. Before the suspects had time to implement their plan, they were detained at the scene of the crime.
According to the SBU, this sabotage attempt is directly related to previous terrorist attacks organized by Russian agents. In January of this year, the SBU detained a Russian agent who was preparing to blow up the building of an AFU unit in the Odessa region.
Both attacks were coordinated by the same Russian intelligence officer. His goal was to destabilize the situation in the region, damage infrastructure, and sow panic among the civilian population.
The detained young men are already facing serious charges. They are suspected of:
- Part 2 of Article 113 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – sabotage under martial law;
- Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – high treason (may be additionally qualified).
For these crimes, they face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
