The Security Service of Ukraine reported the first cases of military capture from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). As it became known, two soldiers from North Korea were captured during the hostilities.
It is noted that the SBU received indisputable evidence of the participation of the DPRK in the Russian Federation's war against our state. We are talking about two North Korean soldiers, one of whom was captured on January 9, 2025 by the fighters of tactical group No. 84 of the SSO, and the other by paratroopers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Immediately after being captured, the foreigners were given all the necessary medical care and taken to Kyiv.
The captives do not speak Ukrainian, English or Russian, so communication with them takes place through Korean translators in cooperation with South Korean intelligence.
At the time of capture, one of the foreigners was carrying a Russian-style military ID issued in the name of another person with registration in the Republic of Tuva PF. And the other was without documents at all.
During the interrogation, the North Korean soldier, who had the ticket, told SBU officers that this document was issued to him in Russia in the fall of 2024. Then, according to him, part of the combat units of North Korea were coordinating with the occupier groups for one week.
The captive stated that he was born in 2005, held the position of a gunner and served in the military in North Korea since 2021. The soldier assures that he was traveling allegedly for training, and not for the war against Ukraine.
Another prisoner of war born in 1999 gave practically the same testimony. He gave part of the answers to the questions in writing, because his jaw was injured. He has been serving in the North Korean army since 2016 as a scout sniper.
"This task was not easy: usually the Russians and other military personnel from North Korea finish off their wounded and do everything so that there is no evidence of the participation of another country - North Korea - in the war against Ukraine," President Zelenskyi said.
