In Transcarpathia, the Security Service of Ukraine detained two persons who acted in the interests of Hungary's military intelligence and carried out spy activities against Ukraine. This was reported by the SBU press service.
According to investigators, the detainees were collecting intelligence on military infrastructure, air defense and social sentiment in border areas. Their curator was the personnel officer of the Hungarian intelligence service, whose identity has already been installed.
One of the agents is a 40-year-old resident of Berehiv district, a former military. It was recruited in 2021 and transferred to "standby mode". He began his active activity in September 2024. At the instructions of the curator, he investigated public sentiment in the region, a possible reaction to the introduction of a peacekeeping contingent (including the Hungarian military), studied the situation in the "black market" of weapons, the number of personnel and equipment in parts of the defense forces.
The agent paid special attention to the intelligence of the location of the anti-aircraft missile complexes C-300. After collecting the data, he went to Hungary, using fictitious documents for the care of a sick relative.
The former military service was the other person involved in the service by 2025. Its task was to transmit information about the availability of aviation and defense systems in Transcarpathia, as well as intelligence on the part where it served.
The SBU documented their meetings with the Hungarian curator, during which one of the agents received a special encrypted phone for communication. They also had to obtain information about the Ukrainian military and losses of the Armed Forces on the front.
During the searches, the detainees removed the equipment and other evidence of the subversive activity. They were suspected under Part 2 of Art. 111 of the Criminal Code - State betrayal in the conditions of martial law. The sanction of the article provides for life imprisonment with the confiscation of property.
This is the first publicly documented case in the history of independent Ukraine when agents of Hungarian military intelligence were detained.
