A common product that is often included in daily breakfasts may play an important role in reducing the risk of developing bowel cancer. We are talking about yogurt, which, according to scientists, can have a positive effect on the body's microflora and create natural protection against the disease.
This is reported by British researchers, who draw attention to a worrying trend - a rapid increase in colorectal cancer cases among young people. In recent years, the number of patients under the age of 55 in the world has increased significantly, and one of the reasons is the modern diet with a large number of ultra-processed foods.
Professor of Biomedicine Justin Stebbing notes that long-term studies suggest that regular yogurt consumption may reduce the risk of developing certain aggressive forms of bowel cancer, particularly tumors in the right side of the colon, which tend to have a worse prognosis.
The mechanism of this effect is related to the impact on the intestinal microbiome. Beneficial bacteria contained in yogurt, in particular bifidobacteria, contribute to the restoration of a healthy environment in the intestines. This, in turn, helps reduce inflammatory processes and creates a barrier to the development of pathological changes.
A study that lasted several decades and included more than 150,000 participants showed that people who consumed at least two servings of yogurt per week were less likely to develop aggressive forms of colorectal cancer.
At the same time, scientists emphasize that yogurt is not a universal means of prevention and cannot completely protect against cancer. However, its regular consumption can be one of the important factors in maintaining intestinal health.
In addition to its potential cancer protection, this product has other beneficial properties. It is a source of calcium, which is important for the skeletal system, can help normalize blood pressure, and has a positive effect on metabolism.
Experts emphasize that a comprehensive approach plays a key role in the prevention of cancer - a balanced diet, physical activity, and regular medical examinations.
