The Main Center for Special Control reported that an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.1 was recorded in the Chernivtsi region near Novodniestrovsk on the evening of October 15. The tremors occurred at a depth of 5 kilometers and, according to the classification of seismologists, are imperceptible to humans.
Leading researcher of the Institute of Geophysics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Dmytro Gryn, noted that seismic activity in Ukraine is usually stable, and the main source of noticeable earthquakes is the Romanian Vrancea zone. According to him, in the event of a powerful earthquake from the Vrancea zone, the first seismic waves can reach Kyiv in about two minutes, and surface waves in five minutes.
Hryn also emphasized that in addition to Vrancea, some seismic activity is observed in the Carpathians and the Black Sea area, where tremors usually do not exceed 3–4 points. Separate, but weak vibrations are also recorded in the central regions - in Poltava region and in the Kryvyi Rih region (up to 4–4.5 points), although these territories were previously considered less seismic.
According to the Main Center for Special Control, this episode does not pose a threat to the population - the tremors are classified as imperceptible and there are no reports of damage or casualties.
