On September 14, Orthodox Christians celebrate the Exaltation of the Cross of the Lord, one of the 12 main church holidays of the year, according to the new calendar. This day also commemorates the memory of Saint John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople.
What is celebrated in the Church on September 14?
The Exaltation of the Cross of the Lord symbolizes the exaltation and greatness of the shrine on which Jesus Christ was crucified. Solemn services are held in churches, and believers pray for health, well-being, and protection of the family.
In addition, today the Church honors the memory of Saint John Chrysostom. He was born around 347 in Antioch, received a brilliant education, and after the death of his mother, he took monastic vows. His sermons and works made him one of the most famous theologians. Due to a conflict with Empress Eudoxia, John was twice expelled from Constantinople, and spent his last years in exile. He died on September 14, 407. For his eloquence, he was called Chrysostom.
In the folk calendar, this day is also dedicated to the Lisnyn Icon of the Mother of God, before whom people pray for healing from physical and spiritual illnesses.
