Holidays on September 19: historical events, folk signs and what believers celebrate

Today, believers commemorate the holy martyrs Trochimus, Sabbatius, and Dorimedon, who suffered for their faith in Jesus Christ during the persecutions of the Roman Empire. According to legend, Trochimus and Sabbatius were Christians from Antioch of Pisidia who openly professed their faith during pagan celebrations. After arrest and torture, Sabbatius died in prison, and Trochimus was sent to new torments, where he met Senator Dorimedon. Both were eventually executed for their Christianity.

In the folk calendar, September 19 is known as Trophimus Day. There was a belief: "As Trophimus is, so will the winter be." If the weather is clear and warm, the winter promises to be mild, but if it is cold and rainy, expect a harsh one.

What you can't do on this day:

  • starting important things - it was believed that they would not bring success;

  • quarreling or swearing will bring trouble into the house;

  • Working after sunset — “night fatigue” takes years off your life.

Signs:

  • sunny day - to a long autumn;

  • morning cold - winter will come early;

  • strong wind - to storms and a cold winter;

  • rain - for early snow.

Name days on this day are celebrated by Gavrilo, Georgy, David, Igor, Konstantin, Makar, Nikolay, Alexey, Fedor, and Maria. The talisman of those born on September 19 is the heliotrope stone, which, according to beliefs, helps stop bleeding and stimulates brain function.

Among the famous birthdays on this day are Ukrainian nationalist and military man Oleksandr Muzychko (1962), Olympic champion in artistic gymnastics Valeriy Goncharov (1977), and biathlete and Olympic champion Yulia Dzhima (1990).

Events in history on September 19:

  • 1356 - The English defeat the French at the Battle of Poitiers;

  • 1648 - The first tavern opens in Quebec;

  • 1783 - The Montgolfier brothers launch a balloon with animals in the presence of King Louis XVI;

  • 1982 - Professor Scott Fahlman suggests using the 🙂 emoticon in computer correspondence;

  • 1991 — Kyiv-Mohyla Academy resumes its work.

Also, on September 19, the world celebrates International Pirate Day and Smiley's Birthday.
